FEMA staff are bracing for the dismissal of 1,000 disaster workers.
Even without hurricanes, U.S. disaster costs surpassed $100 billion last year.
A record-setting 21 thunderstorm events each caused at least $1 billion in damages, a sign that more people and property are in harm’s way, including in Utah.
Utah is overdue for a devastating earthquake. The Wasatch Fault has a 43% chance of experiencing a 6.75 or greater magnitude earthquake in the next 50 years, and experts project that such an event would be among the deadliest disasters in our nation’s history.
How well prepared are we for the aftermath when little or no help will be available from FEMA to deal with the disaster and help rebuild? What about the wildfires and floods that affect Utahns every year? Many Utah homeowners have lost their insurance due to the increasing wildfire risk in our serious drought.
Destroying FEMA is just the latest crazy decision from the all-powerful executive who daily signs new orders that affect all of us without consulting Congress. And our members of Congress fail to represent their constituents.
