Readers’ Forum: Electric school buses can lower air pollution for our children

As a grandparent of three young children, I was moved by former mayor of Heber City Kelleen Potter’s recent opinion letter, “Why Utah should invest in electric school buses” (December 2, 2025).

Living in Salt Lake City for over 40 years, I have loved and continue to enjoy Utah’s great outdoors through hiking, running, biking and skiing. When air pollution reaches unhealthy levels, though, all these activities stop.

I hope to instill a love of nature in my grandchildren. We frequent Hogle Zoo, Tracy Aviary, This is the Place Heritage Park, the foothills and, when possible, our national parks. Air pollution already impacts what and when we can safely do so. We check air quality levels before we engage in any outdoor activities.

Salt Lake City School District, as well as Morgan, Granite, Park City, Tintic and Uintah School Districts and Guadalupe School already have some electric school buses, and children in these districts have a healthy diesel-free ride to school. I hope that these and other school districts will expand their fleets of electric buses so that all Utah children can ride to school in quiet, safe buses and can continue to enjoy the gifts of the great outdoors.
